These are the arterioles, venules and capillaries that make up the microcirculation system. It is in this system of the tiniest vessels that blood flows and delivers oxygen and nutrients directly to every cell in our body and removes the metabolic waste.
The average adult body is host to about 8-12 pints of blood. Our heart is pumping non-stop every day to keep that blood flowing through the veins and arteries. Can you imagine how much work it would take to pump blood through 74,000 miles of small vessels? Fortunately nature has built in help for the heart. The small vessels in our body work like muscles, contracting and releasing, to maintain optimal blood flow at the cellular level of the body. A number of things can occur to slow or hinder this blood flow, like age, trauma or injury. Often we don't even realize our blood has diminished until we get symptoms. This is why it is so important to maintain optimal blood flow in our micro-vessels. |
